There are a variety of internal and external grants available to support international activities and recognize significant international contributions of IU faculty members.

Indiana University, through the Office of the Vice President for International Affairs (OVPIA), administers several internal grant awards each year and also advises IU faculty members on other selected external grants.

Freie Universität Berlin–IU Joint Research Workshops and Short-term Research Grants

These grants facilitate research cooperation between Freie Universität Berlin and IU by supporting joint research workshops and short-term research stays for the 2016-17 and 2017-18 academic years.

Fulbright Programs

OVPIA advises IU faculty and professionals from any campus regarding the application process for two of the federal Fulbright programs, the traditional Fulbright Scholar Awards and the Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad Program. The Fulbright-Hays program has been in hiatus since 2012. Faculty can expect to receive an announcement if the program is reestablished.

Global Gateway Seed Grants: China, Europe, India, and Mexico

OVPIA will match up to $5,000 in commitments from other IU units (e.g., departments, schools, campuses) for activities at the China, Europe, India and Mexico Gateway Offices. Preference will be given to applications that build on existing IU institutional partnerships, that involve collaborative activities likely to be sustained and enhanced in the future, and that advance strategic international goals of other IU units as well as the Indiana University International Strategic Plan.

This seed grant program is expanding to include events at our new Gateway operations in Mexico City and Bangkok. Please contact us to discuss timelines if you are interested in one of the new locations.

Note that Bloomington arts and humanities faculty may apply for matched funding from the College Arts & Humanities Institute (CAHI).

International Short-Term Visitors Grants

These grants support travel expenses to bring distinguished visitors to IU campuses for events such as conferences, workshops, lectures or performances that explore international topics, presumably in the arts, social sciences and humanities. Applicants must have support from the department, school, or campus sponsoring the event. Preference will be given to applications with external funding.

OVPIA will contribute to the cost of airfare for invited participants, up to a maximum of $4,500 per event ($1,500 maximum per individual visitor; applicants may seek support for up to three international visitors for one conference or workshop).

Language Learning Grants

Language learning grants provide up to a maximum of $5,000 for IU faculty to acquire new language capability necessary for carrying out a planned research activity or to enhance teaching, or engage in other university-related activities. Priority given to language training that supports research and/or teaching on international topics, presumably linked to activities in other countries. Grants may be awarded for intensive language programs in the US or abroad, special tutorials, or regularly offered language courses. Self study programs will not be funded. Applicants must be tenured or tenure-track faculty members at one of the following IU campuses: IUB, IUE, IUK, IUN, IUPUC, IUPUI, IUS, or IUSB.

Overseas Conference Grants

Overseas conference grants provide support for faculty to participate in an international conference. Applicants must be full-time academic appointees at an IU campus. Applications must have matching commitment with IU institutional funds, e.g., from department, school, or campus.

Overseas Study Program Development Grants

Overseas study program development grants, up to a maximum of $3,000, support faculty to explore the academic and logistical local arrangements for prospective faculty-led study abroad programs. Applicants must be full-time academic appointees on one of following IU campuses: IUB, IUE, IUK, IUN, IUPUI, IUS, or IUSB.

President's International Research Awards

These awards provide funding of up to $50,000 per year, renewable for up to three years, to support high-impact international collaborative research projects that engage one or more of IU's Global Gateways and the communities they serve. Projects may be based at a Gateway or within the region served by a Gateway, but in either case should make full use of the resources, expertise, and networks of one or more Gateways.
